Nearly Finished! Reflections on Big Magic

A book full of ideas about creativity, with tips on how to ignite yours

Welcome to our May/June read. For these months, we’re diving into Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.

We’re more than halfway through Big Magic, and it’s been completely enjoyable so far. Here are a few reflections from my reading:

  • Pens! I’m obsessed with underlining in my paper copy. I’ve made lots of notes and I’ve really enjoyed scribbling all over the book.

  • shares a belief that ‘something wonderful is inside you’. I’ve always believed my responsibility is to ask the right questions and that everyone I meet is interesting if I do—do you agree?

  • The way she thinks about ideas—as something to be nurtured—reminds me to look after the one I have at the moment. I both need to finish my edits, yes, but perhaps I could make a little time to get the new idea sparkling…

What’s Standing Out to You?

Let’s check in:

  • Are there any themes or ideas that have surprised you?

  • Do you like the way she writes? I find her easy to read because she’s so able with storytelling. I was wondering how she found her way to writing this—it’s so confident on the page, but I know when an idea starts it’s such a long way from a finished manuscript. My guess is that it took a lot of writing and thinking to make the material so fluid.
