Beautiful reflections / advice Alice. I love reading you. I admire you for your ability to write books AND raise four children!! Inconceivable to me… :)
Last week was one of the harder weeks to get to the page. It's been lovely to have this space here to connect with other writers and so many readers to remind me that writing a book is a long process and there's no rush. Lovely to hear from you!
I can imagine. You are my hero Alice, whether you get to that page or not. And yes, you are definitely not alone in your struggles. Lovely to connect with you too!
Love. Thank you! I began writing about five years ago, and I find that #9 has been the most challenging at a time when family life can feel all-consuming. Still, the more I show up, the easier it becomes. It's funny, because even on those days drenched in self-doubt, the one thing I know in my gut is that I will keep writing.
I managed this morning when the kids were sleeping and it makes such a difference to my day. And yes, I know that gut feeling so well. Thanks, Maria ❤️
Loved this post, thought provoking and cheering. I agree about turning up every day tho sometimes it’s also good to have a break. We all need to recharge our batteries 😊
Wow. This is a great question to ponder. So I've been on this path for close to 14 years with only a few magazine articles to show for it. No published picture books yet. How does one not throw in the towel? The answer lies in how much I believe in my characters and what they want to tell the world.
I have learned to pay attention to small and large things, like newspaper articles. What could a rescued sulcata tortoise have to say to kids today? Or a retired river boat captain who has patrolled one of the most important rivers in the U.S. for the last 24 years? Find joy in the journey or else find something else to do since we only get one precious life. Don't focus on the "P" word (publication). It's a ticket for pain and struggle. Many artists want to get to Broadway, but you have to love to dance and sing first and foremost. And just look up. Like the day a squirrel grabbed an ice cream cone off the ground at a class picnic when a boy put it down on the ground to join a baseball game. That smart critter spotted it, sped down the tree trunk and then quickly scampered back up to enjoy the treat of his life. I grabbed my phone and captured the culprit in the act. A poem was born and so many have enjoyed it. Look for signs since I believe the universe is often giving us hints that we are on the right path and ideas to inspire us.

I had a quiet hour on the page on Saturday, and it made a big difference ❤️

Thank you, Sue. Yes, you’re right. Sometimes showing up looks a lot like reading a novel under the covers….

Oh, these are wonderful. May I quote you in my next newsletter? I love what you share here. Thank you—either way—for sharing these with me ❤️❤️❤️
