I have not gone on any non-required retreats, but I have been able to sneak off to coffee shops for blocks of time - such a win! we are out of the little kid stage, so now it's just about me making time. I think indulgences help to mark time as a "retreat" - work retreats generally have good food, coffee shop "retreats" for me include a cup of coffee shop coffee and sometimes Halloween/Easter candy I've pinched from my kid's stash. I've also done retreats with my colleague; we do a lot of writing & research together and we are so productive when it's just us in an empty classroom. I hope you get some "retreat" time! Such a nice post.
I love going on retreat! I went on a virtual retreat last weekend through CANSCAIP, where we met up via Zoom a few times a day to chat and share our progress. It was great! And I go on a retreat to St. Peter's Abbey once a year for three nights. Retreats motivate me to write in a way little else does.
All my kids are adults now and sometimes my retreat is TO them rather than FROM them, to spend time with them and the grandchildren, but I still sometimes need to retreat from my surroundings to feel re-energised - for me, even a short walk is a great way to step aside and think, or just enjoy nature. I, too, cannot take longer retreats or head off to conferences, because my one young adult at home still needs support when things get too big for her. I love your idea of creating boundaries and rituals that mark the exit and re-entry. Thank you. Oh, and hoping your summer is filled with fun and love and time for yourself.

A coffee shop always feels like a treat--I have one I go to in Saskatoon called Tot that has a little room upstairs where I love to hide!

A virtual writing retreat sounds so wonderful. And I have on my 'things for one day' St Peter's Abbey. I would love to go!
